CSL Behring (CSL) is a global biotechnology leader developing life-saving therapeutics and vaccines. A critical part of their mission is delivering plasma-derived therapies—supported by a network of more than 300 plasma donation centers across the U.S.
Before every donation, medical staff must determine donor eligibility. These decisions are highly regulated, time-sensitive, and essential to donor safety and patient outcomes. Errors can lead to poor donor experiences, wasted plasma, and delays in delivering therapies to the people who depend on them. As volume increased and regulatory requirements remained stringent, CSL needed a faster, more consistent way to support donor eligibility decision making—without removing medical judgment from the process.
Enabling trusted, agentic decision support in regulated environments
CSL needed more than automation. The team needed a way to deliver accurate, compliant guidance in real time—while ensuring that final eligibility decisions always remained with qualified medical professionals.
Working together, CSL and UiPath took a process-first approach. They identified where automation could support staff without replacing clinical accountability, then designed a conversational experience that fit naturally into existing workflows.
Using the UiPath Platform™, CSL and UiPath co-created Plasma Medical Quick Search (PMQS)—a conversational agent that helps medical staff quickly find accurate, up-to-date guidance from controlled documentation, eliminating manual searches and reducing cognitive load during donor screening.
How CSL used the UiPath Platform
UiPath Autopilot™ CSL used UiPath Autopilot to power PMQS as a conversational agent. Autopilot understands nuanced medical questions, interprets intent, and surfaces accurate, compliant guidance from approved source documents—enabling staff to get answers in seconds instead of manually searching SOPs.
UiPath Automation Cloud™ UiPath Automation Cloud provides the secure, scalable foundation required to deploy PMQS across CSL’s plasma centers. This enabled the team to move quickly from proof of concept to production while meeting enterprise security, quality, and compliance requirements.
UiPath Orchestrator Orchestrator enables centralized management and monitoring of PMQS. CSL uses orchestration and dashboards to track adoption, engagement, accuracy, and compliance KPIs—supporting continuous improvement and regulatory confidence.
Together, these capabilities deliver the right information at the right moment—while final eligibility decisions remain with CSL’s medical staff.
We co-created a solution that enabled us to take care of compliance and regulatory needs while providing medical staff with accurate, comprehensive information in a natural, conversational way—so they didn’t need additional training to use the tool.
