Combining agentic AI, automation, and human expertise to streamline complex workflows

Building on its earlier automation successes, WEX expanded its program to apply agentic AI and automation to more complex workflows—particularly those involving high volumes of communications, documents, and operational decision making.

As the automation program matured, the team faced a new challenge: scaling automation beyond structured processes into complex, communication-driven workflows.

The team uses UiPath Automation Hub to identify and prioritize automation opportunities across the business, helping focus its roadmap on the processes with the greatest operational impact.

Once opportunities are identified, WEX designs and deploys solutions using the UiPath Platform, combining AI, automation, and person oversight depending on the needs of each workflow.

For example, WEX uses UiPath Communications Mining to analyze incoming customer emails and identify the intent behind each request. Automatically categorizing messages helps route them to the appropriate workflow—reducing manual triage and enabling faster responses.

To process information within documents and other unstructured data, WEX uses UiPath Document Understanding™ with IXP. These capabilities extract and interpret key data quickly, accelerating document-heavy workflows that previously required significant manual effort.

Once intent and data are identified, UiPath Robots execute the next step—automating deterministic tasks such as updating accounts, processing requests, or triggering downstream actions. Automating these routine steps reduces repetitive work for employees and improves operational consistency.

Behind the scenes, UiPath Maestro orchestrates these components—connecting AI models, automation workflows, and human-in-the-loop reviews into a unified end-to-end process with full visibility.

WEX also uses UiPath Process Mining to analyze operational data and uncover new opportunities to improve processes over time, helping the team refine workflows and scale automation across the organization.

Together, these capabilities allow WEX to combine AI, automation, and human expertise to streamline complex workflows and deliver faster, more consistent experiences for employees and customers. Today, the automation program saves more than 70,000 hours of manual work annually and has generated $2.7 million in value, while new AI-driven workflows continue to expand what the team can automate.
