Client Overview
Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney (Buchanan) is a full-service U.S. law firm with 18 offices and approximately 480 attorneys and government relations professionals. As part of its focus on innovation across data, automation, and AI, the firm set out to modernize how legal work gets done—especially in areas that are highly process-driven and document-centric, yet still heavily manual.
A key challenge emerged in single-plaintiff litigation, where cases can involve up to 100 micro-tasks and are often priced on a fixed fee, making efficiency and consistency critical. Inconsistent outputs from junior attorneys, extensive review and rework by senior attorneys, and complex formatting requirements across multiple jurisdictions slowed turnaround and impacted profitability. While traditional RPA delivered early gains, Buchanan needed a more advanced way to better coordinate complex, judgment-based workflows.
Buchanan set out to improve a critical part of the litigation process—the review of complaints and creation of response documents—by building a coordinated workflow on the UiPath Platform™. Focusing on key steps within the process, the team combined AI, automation, and human validation to streamline how work flows across systems and teams.
UiPath Autopilot™ orchestrates the workflow from intake through document generation, while UiPath Robots handle execution across systems. AI capabilities within the UiPath Platform™ interpret complaint data, extract key allegations, and apply established legal logic. UiPath Apps enable attorneys to review and validate outputs at key decision points, ensuring accuracy and control throughout. UiPath Data Fabric maintains continuity across each step, and integrations connect seamlessly with existing systems.
The solution supports the generation of a first draft of response documents—formatted for the appropriate jurisdiction and populated with standardized content. Attorneys remain hands-on throughout the review and validation process, refining outputs and focusing on the substance of each case.
By reducing manual effort in these early stages, the solution improves consistency, reduces rework, and accelerates turnaround for key steps in the process—while enabling senior attorneys to spend more time on case strategy and client outcomes.
The first draft is more accurate, and our attorneys can now focus on strategy instead of rework.
